WORD STUDY – VIBRATIONS (Virtue)
Mark 5:30: “And Jesus, immediately knowing in himself that virtue had gone out of him.”
Virtue: Greek: dynamis – power, force, might, strength, violence.         Aramaic:  dahil – vibrations
I recall as a child hearing preachers talk about the “virtue” that went out of Jesus when the woman with the issue of blood touched his garment.  The preacher would tell us that in the Greek the word used for “virtue” is dynamis where we get our word for dynamite and describe this as a powerful force or mighty strength.  Later when I started to hang around the charismatics I would see this “power” demonstrated with people being knocked over.  Yet, this always troubled me for a couple reasons.  One, when I studied Greek myself, I found the word also means violence.  This might, this dynamite, explosive power, force, violent strength is called in the KJV “virtue.”  I could not put the two together.   Another thing, it is clear in Scripture that this poor gal was not knocked flat on her back by some violent power.  Something else seems to have happened and it wasn’t explosive or violent.  The whole story expresses gentleness, a sense of deep love and communion.  This woman felt something wonderful not explosive or violent or any of the other words applied to dynamis, except the word virtue.
When Jesus spoke and said “virtue” went out from him he was speaking the Northern dialect of Aramaic and used the word “dahil” as used in my Aramaic Bible.  There are five words in the Aramaic that are rendered as “power” in English.  There is gabarawat which is a wonder, a power like in a miracle.  There is wasnan which is a power of strength, salat which is power of authority and tavaqap which is an explosive power.   The fifth word, which is used in this verse, is “dahil” which is the power created by vibrations.  Vibrations are subtle; you have to pause and concentration to pick them up.
We can feel vibrations from music, and musical instruments. A car with a powerful engine will vibrate when at a stop light.   Scientist tells us our bodies vibrate.  Light waves vibrate. Even color gives us a vibration.  I was once a leader for an Awana group.  I developed my own definition of an eight year old.  You can put your hand on his head and feel him vibrating.  There is power there, ready to go and if I am not in sync with that power, I will become very annoyed.  If my energy level reaches that of the eight year old and I am in sync with his vibrations, I will enjoy the next activity.  I drive a bus for seniors and the disabled taking them for medical treatments.  Often they are very nervous and apprehensive over the impeding procedure. I play orchestra music on the bus stereo and many comment on the calming effect of the music.  Actually, the calmness comes when their vibrations come in sync with that of the music.
The reason everything vibrates is because all matter, all that exist in the natural world are made up of atoms and molecules that vibrate.  God formed the world through vibrations.  He only created the heavens and earth.  The rest was formed by calling it into being. He created the atoms or the building blocks and then vibrated them into a tree, rock, etc.  This woman’s faith and those around her came into sync like a beautiful orchestra with Jesus as the conductor and when that happened the healing took place.
Worship music that is in sync with God’s vibrations help bring our vibrations into sync with God’s and as a result we experience God’s pleasure.  Jesus felt a special pleasure when his virtue, dahil or vibrations came in sync with the woman’s vibrations and those around him.  Worship took place at that moment and the healing? Well that was just a byproduct.
