Hebrew Word Study – Beast – Chiyth – חַיַּ֣ת. Cheth Yod Taw
Genesis 3:1: “Now the serpent was more subtle than any beast of the field which the Lord had made.”
Last Saturday in our Torah Study we studied about Balaam who tried to put a supernatural curse on Israel, but even though He was a prophet and mystic he was unable to do so. This Saturday we will examine the story of Phineas who put an end to Balaam’s attempt to undermine Israel who tried to remove God’s blessing through natural means. Sometimes it is difficult to determine what is natural and what is supernatural.
We will examine Genesis 3:1. The serpent was believed to be Satan who enticed Eve to disobey God. You see the word serpent is nachash which also means an enchanter. Did the serpent supernaturally enchant Eve to sin or did he use natural means.

It is curious that the serpent is compared to all the beast of the field, all the natural creation of God but separate from the human being. The word beast in Hebrew is chyith with is a reference to all life, even vegetation. Being more cunning than all life is suggesting that all life has intelligence even plants. What does this suggest about life prior to the fall. Being created in God’s image would mean we would have access to things like mental telepathy. Adam apparently communicated with animals as he named them. One theory is that all these physic phenomena were a reality with Adam and Eve but at the fall when sin entered the world these abilities were diminished by God as sin would quickly corrupt these abilities causing more chaos than we have today.
Just a theory, of course, but fun to think about it and wwe will discusss this in light of other passages. Join us this Saturday or listen to the recording of this interesting study. I thought of using the title “Did Jesus Swat Flies?” But that would take us down another rabbit and i do want to stay on topic with this particular Torah Study entitled Pinchas.
